Running but not cooling. Low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty condenser coil, or a failed compressor. Refrigerant doesn't get used up — if it's low, there's a leak, and we find it rather than just topping it up.

Won't turn on. Capacitors are the most common cause by a wide margin. They fail quietly and often in heat. Also contactors, thermostats and tripped breakers.

Outdoor unit runs, indoor fan doesn't. Blower motor or control board.

Freezing up. Ice on the refrigerant lines usually means restricted airflow — a filthy filter or a blocked return — or low refrigerant. Turn it off and let it thaw before we arrive.

Short cycling. Turning on and off repeatedly. Capacitors, thermostat placement, or an oversized system.

Water around the indoor unit. Blocked condensate drain. Common, and it causes damage if left.

A capacitor gives the motor the jolt it needs to start. They're inexpensive, they fail regularly, and they fail more in extreme heat — which is precisely when you notice.

If your AC hums but the fan doesn't spin, a capacitor is the likely cause and it's a quick repair.

Check the filter. Restricted airflow causes freeze-ups and poor cooling.

Check the breaker. AC units often have their own, and it trips.

Clear the outdoor unit. Grass clippings, leaves and cottonwood fluff block the condenser coil. Give it a foot of clear space all around.

If it's frozen , switch it off and let it thaw fully. Running a frozen system damages the compressor.
