Heat Pump Repair in Salt Lake City
Heat pumps do both jobs — heating and cooling — which means twice the running hours and a few failure modes that a standard furnace or AC never has.
They're also less familiar to a lot of technicians, which is why some heat pump faults get misdiagnosed as something simpler.
We diagnose the problem first and give you an up-front price before any work begins. The diagnostic is $99, and it comes off your repair cost if you go ahead.
Common heat pump problems we repair
Heats but won't cool, or cools but won't heat. Usually the reversing valve, which is the component that switches the system between modes.
Icing up in heat mode. Some frost is normal in cold weather — the system runs a defrost cycle to clear it. Persistent ice means the defrost board, the sensor, or the outdoor fan.
Stuck in defrost. The system runs the defrost cycle continuously and never gets back to heating.
Running constantly without reaching temperature. Often low refrigerant, which means a leak, or a failing compressor.
Auxiliary heat running all the time. Expensive, and usually means the heat pump itself isn't keeping up.
Outdoor unit won't start. Capacitors, contactors or control boards, same as an AC.
Why heat pumps need someone who knows them
A heat pump in heat mode is running the refrigeration cycle backwards. Reversing valves, defrost boards and outdoor sensors have no equivalent on a standard system, and a technician who mostly services furnaces can misread the symptoms.
We service them regularly, including in cold weather when their behavior is least intuitive.
Before you call
Some frost on the outdoor unit in winter is normal. If it clears periodically, the defrost cycle is working.
If it's encased in ice, or if auxiliary heat seems to be running constantly, that's worth a call.
Check the filter too — restricted airflow causes problems in both modes.
Heat Pump Repair FAQs
What does a heat pump repair cost?
The diagnostic is $99 and comes off your repair if you go ahead. We quote the full price before starting.
Is frost on the outdoor unit normal?
Some, in cold weather. The system should clear it periodically. Solid ice is not normal.
Why is my auxiliary heat always running?
Usually the heat pump isn't keeping up — low refrigerant, a defrost fault, or a system that's undersized for the weather. It's worth diagnosing, because auxiliary heat is expensive to run.
Do you install heat pumps as well?
Yes. We install Goodman, Rheem and Carrier systems.
How soon can you come out?
We prioritize same-day service where the schedule allows.
